FISHING REPORT-
Posted 12/16/2009

[Galveston Bay] A combination of fresh water, windy cold conditions, and significant water temperature drop have slowed fishing in some areas but overall fishing is still pretty good. Trout action is good in the upper complex like Tabbs Bay, Burnett Bay, and Scott's Bay. Fair action in the Clear lake channel and lake area and protected areas in East and West Bay's. Fish still somewhat shallow over scattered shell and mud mix bottoms with soft plastics and mirrolures accounting for the most bites. Flounder still remained stacked up in the lower channel areas as they continue to make their move to warm gulf waters for the winter spawn. Galveston channel continues to be best bet for good catches and protection from cold northeast winds, with live finger mullet being best bait for catching limits.

[Matagorda Bay's] East Bay best bet for drifter's over mid bay shell for solid trout and tons of redfish. Soft plastics and mirrolures continue to hammer out limits although weather conditions remain tough. Redfish are also being caught over scatterd shell and drop offs in the intracoastal waterway.

[Lake Livingston] Kickapoo Creek area and Pinwaugh area continue to produce some nice Crappie over brush tops in 9-18 ft of water on minnows and black/chartreuse jigs.

[Lake Conroe] Good Crappie catches still coming in from the pilings at the 1097 bridge and private boat docks in 10-20 feet of water. Live minnows and jigs best bet.

HUNTING REPORT- Deep south Texas is starting to have a small hint that the rut is getting close. Signs of rubs and scrapes and some sparring activity showing indications that the full blown rut is about 2-3 weeks away. Good deer being killed all over the state due to movement caused by cold weather and lack of foilage, which has animals hungry and on the move. Corn is like candy now to all animals and outlook is good form now and on into the rut. Waterfowl season reopens this weekend and outlook is good for Texas coastal prairies and marsh. Extreme cold weather conditions in the north and midwest have relocated birds to the coast throughout Texas and Louisiana. Tons of Mallards and Geese have moved in for the winter and with favorable conditions this opener should be fantastic.

Good luck and happy hunting, Capt. Mick
