SR 610's Marc Vandermeer, Matt Jackson and Adam Wexler weigh in with their thoughts on the Longhorns...
Marc Vandermeer: "With OU being the sexy pick in the Big 12, will the Longhorns use it as motivation to win the Red River Shootout and crash the championship game? Too many questions on defense to predict bit things happening this year. The Sooners always seem to be the power that exceeds expectations and outperform the preseason picks. Mac Brown admits that his team is flying under the radar. He also knows that Longhorn seasons should be measured in championships not bowl appearances. This would be a fine year to stun the prognosticators and win the Big 12 South. If they do, we'll be talking about Colt McCoy's growth and a huge defensive turnaround under Will Muschamp."
Matt Jackson: "The Texas Longhorns do not bring back many known quantities to their 2008 football team. QB Colt Mccoy and DE Brian Orakpo are the only star caliber players who return with any experience. The Longhorns must answer questions at LB, RB, WR, and perhaps most importantly their very young secondary. By far the best recruit hauled in by Mac Brown is new Defensive Coordinator Will Muschamp who became the second straight DC to ditch the Auburn Tigers and head to the 40 acres. Muschamp is considered a head coach in waiting and will surely get the players in better positions to make plays. Unfortunately for many Longhorn fans, OC Greg Davis returns with the nations most un-inspiring play calling. It will be interesting to see if the recently returning Major Applewhite will have much of an influence on the game management of the offense. The Longhorns' non-conference schedule is hardly challenging, but road games @Kansas, Colorado, and Texas Tech will be no picnic. Factor in the annual Red River Shootout with OU and a home game against Missouri, and the Longhorns will be hard pressed to win more than 9 games. Prediction: 9-3 Cotton Bowl Berth
Adam Wexler: "Far less certainty about this Longhorn season than in year's past. Texas added key coaches on both sides of the field with Major Applewhite on offense and Will Muschamp now on board to run the defense, but they'll both be working with young groups. Soon-to-be all-time leading passer Colt McCoy returns but has virtually no proven offensive weapons alongside him. The non-conference schedule should actually do a nice job of preparing the Horns for a difficult Big 12 slate, but they'll need their very young team do gain experience and confidence quickly to challenge for the conference crown, which most feel is a bit unlikely."
